It is not coincidental that the main chemistry buildings at both the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh are named the Joseph Black Building. Born in 1728, Black was educated at Glasgow 1744-1749, then completed his medical studies at Edinburgh 1750-1755. Then he joined Glasgow as lecturer then professor in 1756, and in 1766 moved back to Edinburgh to become professor of chemistry until his death in 1799.
